Like any respectable bartender, the folks at Firkin serve up their drinks with a story. To compliment their amazing line up of Oktoberfest brews, Firkin wants to fill your mug with some knowledge about the world’s most famous beer drinking event.

Attended annually by over 6 million people who drink over 6 million liters of beer, Oktoberfest celebrated its 200^th anniversary this year.

The festival itself dates back to the Royal Wedding of King Ludwig I to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen in October of 1810. The citizens of Munich were invited to celebrate on the fields in front of the city gates. Evolving to include all of Bavaria, the original choices of amusements included horse races and an agricultural show with the first carousel and two swings were added to the line-up in 1818.

Visitors were able to quench their thirst at small beer stands. In 1896, enterprising landlords with the backing of the breweries set up the first beer tents and hall, replacing the stands. Today, by German law, only the six Munich breweries are allowed to serve beer at the Oktoberfest tents.

While Munich’s 2010 Oktoberfest officially ended October 4th, the Firkin will continue to rotate in some of the fest beers this fall including Paulaner, which was imported to the United States for the first time in 2010, and Spaten, the world’s first Oktoberfest beer created in 1872.

Now that you’ve learned the legacy, come to the Firkin to have a stein of Paulaner, Spaten or another choice from our huge selection of brews. The Firkin has a beer to match every story.

I have no idea where it came from but the the Nitro bug has bitten me. First we will feature Moylan's Irish Red and then Left Hand Sawtooth Ale, Left Hand Milk Stout, and Old Rasputin!

Also I will be heading to Belgium just in time for the 12th Annual Beer Weekend in Brussels with Jen in September. We'll be meeting up with some of the brewers that have visited Firkin in the past and we will be visiting some of their Breweries, Blenderies, and Monasteries. So in short keep your eyes fixed here as I blog about our trip.

Hello everyone,

I’m sorry to say tickets are not in yet… We do have a couple of new beers though to talk about!

New on Draught

We were able to score four different versions of New Holland’s Mad Hatter I.P.A. including Black Hatter which uses roasted malts, Rye Hatter, Oaked Hatter which was aged in Bourbon oak barrels and last but not least we have Imperial Hatter. All of these are available individually OR we are offering a “Flight of the Hatters” which is a sampling of all four Hatters for $12.00! That starts tonight!

Lagunitas Lucky 13, which is a favorite of mine, is their hopped to all goodness red ale. Originally released as a one off beer to celebrate their 13^th anniversary, it quickly grew into a brewery favorite and is resurrected every year. Amarillo hops! Available 7-9-10.

Dark Horse’s Sapient Trip-Ale is back. This Belgian style tripel has notes of lemon pepper, rock candi sugar, and a comfortable slight wheat note.

Double Crooked Tree from Dark Horse Brewing Company is now on tap. This hopfilled chewy double i.p.a. is a very limited run and will be gone very soon.

We just tapped up Ken & Fritz from Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. This is their 1^st in their 30^th Anniversary series and is a collaboration between Ken from Sierra Nevada and Fritz from Anchor Brewing Co. It’s a fantastically strong and complex strong dark/stout that packs all the punch in the beginning and releases with a very smooth finish. This is a one time release that we will not see again.

Eric’s Ale from New Belgium is a delightful 3 year old blond sour ale infused with peaches. The peach is mostly on the nose and rounds the tart off, but this is one of the best beers for any sunny afternoon you will come across.

We never get our tickets before July, usually a week before the festival so every years it’s a fingers crossed. I can not currently put my right hand on any book of spiritual nature on this subject, but as soon as I can with no post mortem worries I will let you know.

On cask we just tapped Butty Bach from Wye Valley, finally an English Bitter from England! This little gem is a sessionable 4% a.b.v. with a nice earthy nose, lemon grass bitterness and a hint of pepper at the finish.

We just tapped Stone I.P.A., Stone Levitation, and Arrogant Bastard and will be tapping Stone Pale Ale and Stone Ruination I.P.A. sometime today to start the party rolling for the big event on Saturday!! I'd like to take a moment to thank our Windy City rep Travis for helping make this all happen and all his 18 hour work days this week putting Stone Brewing Co. beers into your hands. If you see the brother out, buy him a beer, he deserves it!

A couple of new beers on tap to talk about but first; What's got two thumbs, is listening to The Specials "Stereo-Typical" and is drinking a bottle of Stone Smoked Porter right now while being geeked that Greg Koch posted on their blog??? THIS GUYYYY!

Pepe Nero! This limited run Belgian style black saison brewed with rye from Goose Island Brewing Company is not only fantastic, but great for an hours worth of playing "I taste this!" at the bar.

Founder Red's Rye (are the rye beers a theme this week?) is back and ready for you to get your hop fix on with.

Dark Horse Brewing Company's Plead the 5th is baaaaaaaaccckkk!!! This Russian Imperial Stout which is the 5th in their series of 5 beers for winter pulls no punches and leads to no doubt in your mind that this will be one of the best beers you will have all year long!

I want to thank Josh from Great Lakes Brewing Company for letting us have the honors of pouring one of the two barrels of Lake Erie Monster to be pre-released this past Wednesday, and breaking a Firkin record for the fastest floated keg in the history of the Firkin. I apologize for all the poor souls who came in just a couple of hours after it was tapped just to be told, "Sorry, it's gone.."

Oh the hiatus is over, I've been ignoring you like a green headed stepchild blog followers... Well, no more!

New on draught we have Anchor Humming Ale! This rare anniversary beer that Anchor put out for their 30th has been a San Francisco treat only, but now we were able to sneak in 2 barrels for you enjoyment. Made with the rare and unusual Nelson Sauvin hop, this pale ale has a lemon grass and spice note that's pretty unique.

Rocky's Revenge from the fantastic brewers over in Lake Mills, WI at Tyranena Brewing Company made a really nice American Brown ale that they then age a portion in bourbon barrels and re-blend it for shiznitz and giggles. Hi all, just wanted to drop a line on some new and upcoming beers for you at Firkin.

New On Draught

Bellhaven’s Twisted Thistle I.P.A. is now on tap. This hopped up English style pale is anything but average with a great complex bitterness that includes a hint of smoked peat.

Spaten Oktoberfest is back on tap as well as are Oktoberfests from HofBrau, Ayinger, and Hacker Pschorr!!! Get your malty goodness now.

We received another barrel of Green Flash West Coast I.P.A. for your enjoyment. Starts of all sweet like it’s your smooth hoppy friend then WHAM! Bitterness, chaos, anarchy, and strong as heck to boot.

Imperial Brown Goose is on draught. This beer hasn’t been brewed since 2006 and it’s also the first time it’s featured on draught only. Overheard statements about the beer from guests: “Whiskey in a glass!” “Sweet Jesus, wow, my taste buds are numb” “OMG, how much is it???”

Emmett’s Pale Ale on the Cask Engine should be ready by Friday morning!

Now, how about a little Captain Sig’s Deadliest Ale from Rogue in your glass? I’ve never been a fan of nautical themed bars, even though I thought Isaac was possibly the best bartender ever, but I’m ready to toss a ship wheel on the wall for this beer.

I found a couple of bottles of Goose Island Bourbon County Stout 2008 on the shelves at Gold Eagle in Libertyville, looks like Goose had an extra case and shipped it to them. Also if for some reason you’re out in California in the next couple of weeks and can’t get to Russian River Brewing Co. might I suggest their online beer store… They will only ship instate, so my idea is go to the online store, buy it a week or two before the trip, have it sent to the hotel where they will store it for you until you arrive! Viola!

To smoke it like this warms the heart of every Rausch beer lover, and to do it this well just kills us. Hello everyone, guess what? The Great Taste Bus Trip tickets are in and ready to sell!!!! They are $85+ tax this year and include the: 1 ticket to the Great Taste of the Midwest, A seat on the famed Great Taste Bus, Keg of beer on the bus (why not?).

FAQ’s

1) How do I get a ticket??? Call Firkin at 847-367-6168 and say I need to buy some Great Taste Bus Trip Tickets! DO NOT send me an email for a ticket; I have no pull at that place.

2) When is the trip? Saturday, August 8th at 9:30a.m.

3) What’s the ticket limit? 2 tickets per person, there are only 38 to go around.

4) What time does the bus leave? You must be at Firkin by no later than 9am! The bus leaves at 9:30am and WILL leave without you as we cannot have a mutiny on our hands.

5) How long is the trip? The Taste officially starts at 1pm and ends at 6pm. We will leave the grounds by bus at 6:30pm (see #2 for tardiness questions) and be home around 9:30. It is a long day but a fun day.

6) Is there a bathroom on the bus? Yes

7) Lawn chairs and blankets allowed? Yes, I encourage them. We usually form a large circle under some shady tree’s and make a Firkin camp site (no fires) you will need to take a rest at some point, regroup and geek out about the beers you’ve tried or haven’t tried yet. Storage is under the bus.

8) Is my stuff safe at the circle? Don’t leave purses or expensive things, but your chair will be fine.

9) Can I smoke at the Taste? No smoking on the bus, but there will be a smoker’s area up there.

10) Do I need to bring money? There will be unique shirts and things to buy there sold both by the breweries and the event promoters plus small vendors. There will be food there for purchase. They have not in the past accepted credit cards or checks.

11) Any tips? Sunscreen, slow and steady don’t overdo it early, roam in groups to try more, keep an eye on special release boards, lines for said special release’s form up to 45 minutes early, hit the Real Ale tent, have a good time.

12) Are there TV’s on the bus? I believe so

Gorch Fock! Three Floyd’s makes a spot on German style Helles lager with this one. No it’s not a hopped up interpretation of the style, it’s true to style and quite outstanding to boot. After Gorch Fock we will be tapping their Blunderbus which is a smoked version of the Gorch Fock!! Mmmm… Smoked Helles!

We just tapped up some Tyranena Scurvy Brewed with Orange Peel for all you hop-aholics! This early summer seasonal release is part of their Brewers Gone Wild series.

Waiting to hear word on a possible 10,000 Lakes Festival weekend pass Give-away with Summit Brewery to celebrate the release of their Horizon Red. More info to come soon!

Just tapped a couple of new beverages for your enjoyment.

Reissdorf Kolsch from Koln(Cologne), Germany is finally back at Firkin!!! This uber-light and crisp ale is slightly malty and softly dry. It's top fermented for only around 8 days then it goes through 4 weeks of cold conditioning before being enjoyed by you.

Grassroots by Great Lakes Brewing Company is a refreshing saison style ale all herbed up with chamomile, corriander, lemon basil and lemon balm from their own herb gardens! Great mouth feel with hints of banana, citrus and a touch of white pepper.
