Thursday, October 8, 2009

Wheeeee!

Hi all, just wanted to drop a line on some new and upcoming beers for you at Firkin.

New On Draught

Bellhaven’s Twisted Thistle I.P.A. is now on tap. This hopped up English style pale is anything but average with a great complex bitterness that includes a hint of smoked peat.

Spaten Oktoberfest is back on tap as well as are Oktoberfests from HofBrau, Ayinger, and Hacker Pschorr!!! Get your malty goodness now.

We received another barrel of Green Flash West Coast I.P.A. for your enjoyment. Starts of all sweet like it’s your smooth hoppy friend then WHAM! Bitterness, chaos, anarchy, and strong as heck to boot.

Imperial Brown Goose is on draught. This beer hasn’t been brewed since 2006 and it’s also the first time it’s featured on draught only. Overheard statements about the beer from guests: “Whiskey in a glass!” “Sweet Jesus, wow, my taste buds are numb” “OMG, how much is it???”

Emmett’s Pale Ale on the Cask Engine should be ready by Friday morning!

Upcoming Goodness

Old Curmudgeon
Unearthly I.P.A.
Bitter End Cask
Pumking (10-31-09)
Harpoon I.P.A.
Matilda

More information to come available soon!

Cheers,
Dave

New Beers!

Hey everyone,

A beautiful day predicted today, Monday of course… We had a fantastic gathering with Brew Master Matt Long from Big Sky Brewing Company last evening. He was even gracious enough to sign bottles of the Olde Blue Hair Bourbon Barrel Aged Barleywine for our guests that came to hang out with us. Thanks also to Joe from Stoller Distribution for help making it happen. If you missed him he will be at the South Loop Binny's Tuesday night!

New on Draught & Cask from Big Sky Brewing Company:

Moose Drool
Big Sky Belgian Wit (limited production/not in market)
E.S.B. ***On Cask*** (limited production/not in market)

New On Draught:

Krankshaft Kolsch from Metropolitan has landed, literally the kegs were just filled and now it’s pouring into your glass at Firkin. I was very excited to tap this light crisp German style ale and then drink the hell out of it.

Tyranena’s Hop Whore has also landed at Firkin! This amazing double I.P.A. is part of their “Brewers Gone Wild” series and I hope this badass is going to be a solid beer in their yearly rotation!

Now, how about a little Captain Sig’s Deadliest Ale from Rogue in your glass? I’ve never been a fan of nautical themed bars, even though I thought Isaac was possibly the best bartender ever, but I’m ready to toss a ship wheel on the wall for this beer.

New in Bottle’s:

Tyranena’s Rocky’s Revenge
Southern Tier Porter 9-15-09
Southern Tier I.P.A. 9-15-09
Southern Tier PumKing 9-15-09
Fantome Saison
Plus more coming soon….

Coming soon on draught:

Southern Tier PumKing
Oaked Domaine Du Paige
Southern Tier Iniquity
Three Floyds Munsterfest
Hofbrau Oktoberfest
Rogue Maierfest (again!)
Spaten Oktoberfest

Cheers,

Dave

BeerMail Resurrected!

Back from the depths of my weak computer skills I call forth thee BEERMAIL!!! That would’ve been a lot cooler if I had a sword and a wizard or tiger behind me when I spoke that…

So heelloooo everyone and welcome/willkommen back, if you would like to join our Beermail List then please send me an email Dave@Firkin.us so you can get the full monty like the example below instead of just the regular updates found on the blog.

BIG SKY PARTY!

When: Sunday, Sept 13th 4pm-???
Where: Firkin! 515 N Milwaukee Ave, Libertyville, U.S.A.
What: Come meet brewer Matt Long and Others from Big Sky Brewing Co

Long story short (get it) come on down to hang out with Matt and us while sipping their very tasty beverages. On tap we will have: Moose Drool, Trout Slayer, I.P.A., Olde Blue Hair Barleywine, and a special Belgian Wit. On cask we will have a treat because he’s bringing down a rare cask of their E.S.B. In bottles we will be featuring Bourbon barrel aged Olde Bluehair and more surprises!!

New on Draught:

Dark Horse Sapient Trip ale which is a pretty damn well made Belgian strong Abbey Tripel with nice pepper and candi sugar hints.

I Spyed/Heads Up!:

I found a couple of bottles of Goose Island Bourbon County Stout 2008 on the shelves at Gold Eagle in Libertyville, looks like Goose had an extra case and shipped it to them. Also if for some reason you’re out in California in the next couple of weeks and can’t get to Russian River Brewing Co. might I suggest their online beer store… They will only ship instate, so my idea is go to the online store, buy it a week or two before the trip, have it sent to the hotel where they will store it for you until you arrive! Viola!

Cheers,

Dave

Great Taste Tickets!!

Beermail!!!!

Hello everyone, guess what? The Great Taste Bus Trip tickets are in and ready to sell!!!! They are $85+ tax this year and include the: 1 ticket to the Great Taste of the Midwest, A seat on the famed Great Taste Bus, Keg of beer on the bus (why not?).

FAQ’s

1) How do I get a ticket??? Call Firkin at 847-367-6168 and say I need to buy some Great Taste Bus Trip Tickets! DO NOT send me an email for a ticket; I have no pull at that place.

2) When is the trip? Saturday, August 8th at 9:30a.m.

3) What’s the ticket limit? 2 tickets per person, there are only 38 to go around.

4) What time does the bus leave? You must be at Firkin by no later than 9am! The bus leaves at 9:30am and WILL leave without you as we cannot have a mutiny on our hands.

5) How long is the trip? The Taste officially starts at 1pm and ends at 6pm. We will leave the grounds by bus at 6:30pm (see #2 for tardiness questions) and be home around 9:30. It is a long day but a fun day.

6) Is there a bathroom on the bus? Yes

7) Lawn chairs and blankets allowed? Yes, I encourage them. We usually form a large circle under some shady tree’s and make a Firkin camp site (no fires) you will need to take a rest at some point, regroup and geek out about the beers you’ve tried or haven’t tried yet. Storage is under the bus.

8) Is my stuff safe at the circle? Don’t leave purses or expensive things, but your chair will be fine.

9) Can I smoke at the Taste? No smoking on the bus, but there will be a smoker’s area up there.

10) Do I need to bring money? There will be unique shirts and things to buy there sold both by the breweries and the event promoters plus small vendors. There will be food there for purchase. They have not in the past accepted credit cards or checks.

11) Any tips? Sunscreen, slow and steady don’t overdo it early, roam in groups to try more, keep an eye on special release boards, lines for said special release’s form up to 45 minutes early, hit the Real Ale tent, have a good time.

12) Are there TV’s on the bus? I believe so

O.k. New on draught!!!!

Gorch Fock! Three Floyd’s makes a spot on German style Helles lager with this one. No it’s not a hopped up interpretation of the style, it’s true to style and quite outstanding to boot. After Gorch Fock we will be tapping their Blunderbus which is a smoked version of the Gorch Fock!! Mmmm… Smoked Helles!

Cheers and good day!

Dave

Just tapped up Apocalypse Cow from Three Floyds.

"This complex double India pale ale has an intense citrus and floral hop aroma balanced by a velvety malt body which has been augmented with lactose milk sugar. With this different take on an IPA we have brewed an ale that is both pleasing to drink and, once again, “not normal.”" -3floyds.com

Newly Tapped Beers

Just tapped a couple of new beverages for your enjoyment.

Reissdorf Kolsch from Koln(Cologne), Germany is finally back at Firkin!!! This uber-light and crisp ale is slightly malty and softly dry. It's top fermented for only around 8 days then it goes through 4 weeks of cold conditioning before being enjoyed by you.

Grassroots by Great Lakes Brewing Company is a refreshing saison style ale all herbed up with chamomile, corriander, lemon basil and lemon balm from their own herb gardens! Great mouth feel with hints of banana, citrus and a touch of white pepper.
